Elder Joseph W. Schindler -- The Czech Republic

I have created a blog to make it easier to share information about Joseph and his mission to the Czech Republic. I hope you enjoy Joseph's experiences and reflections as much as we do!

Joseph's letter dated 30May2011

[Dear friends and family, this is the letter which we received from Joseph yesterday. As we have gone from a very cool Spring - to some very hot weather here in Michigan (95 degrees today!), we hope that you have all enjoyed your Memorial Day Weekend and that you are all ready for a successful and safe Summer! Joseph's editor - BWS]

Dear Family,

Za prvé, Happy Birthday Grandpa. [Grandpa Schindler turned 84 on Monday!]

Za druhé,...well, this week has flown by as well. I have almost no idea where the time is going, although it is certainly moving forward, much faster than it has before. Before in my mission I felt that I had so much time left and that some weeks just went on forever. Now I feel like I follow up on my weekly goals just a day or two later, not seven. I realize that I do not have much time left and I am doing my best to use every minute that I have to work to improve myself and do the things that I am meant to do. I know that if I work now, this day, I will be able to do the things that the Lord expects from me.

Elder Darrington is an excellent companion and missionary. He is filled with love and hope and has a powerful testimony of Jesus Christ. He goes home in just under three months, but it is amazing to see his continued dedication and drive to do what Heavenly Father expects of him. He is very loving to me, and as an added bonus, he is not hesitant or afraid to correct me. This has been a great blessing and I am so glad he loves me enough to put me on the right path when I need it. Last week when we were riding the train up to Prague for a Training conference, we had an unexpected switch to buses and then back to the train due to some problem on the rails. This was easy for us, but it turned out, the many tourists on the train were rather confused and surprised. I remember that just as we took our seats, Elder Darrington looked out the window and said 'we should help those people'. I did not know who he was speaking about. I looked out the window however and saw several people dragging suitcases and bags through the gravel on the way to the bus. So we jumped off the bus and ran over and helped move several people and their luggage to the waiting buses. I was so grateful that he looks for ways to serve just like that.

Our conference was great last Friday. We learned much and President Irwin taught us about the importance of the Holy Ghost in conversion and the need that we have to make sure the people we teach understand and feel that influence. We leaned a lot, picked up many commitments and are ready to get out into the field and apply it. We also have a suprise mission conference tomorrow with Elder Pearson of the First Quorum of Seventy, who is picking up his son, Elder Pearson, Prime, (their are two Elder Pearson serving in the mission here) at the end of his mission. We are looking forward to that with much anticipation and knowing that through the conference we will find ways that we can improve.

Milo Rybák continues to do well and is building his testimony. He reads very extensively from the Book of Mormon and has been to church four times now. He also has started coming to the Branch Family Home Evening activities and has become well integrated into the Branch. He is still working on quitting smoking, but we know that he can overcome that obstacle. We are pleased to be meeting with him.

I am doing well. I am healthy, and am even eating mostly decent food, most of the time (by this, I mean decent regarding health, not quality. The food here is of good quality). It is summer now, and so our suit coats are gone for the most part and we are happy to be out in the nice warm weather. This will be an excellent summer.

I spoke in Sacrament Meeting yesterday about service, tying it into charity and diligence. I think that the talk went well and that people listened. I tried to teach from the scriptures and to bear personal testimony. I hope it went well. I actually thought I was speaking last week and so I had the entire talk prepared, and then was able to wait an additional week. I did not really change anything, but I was not nervous, although I forgot the word for 'weeds' in Czech and so that was a small, amusing glitch. (A weed is 'plevel' in Czech, by the way).

Life is good over here. This city is very beautiful and I love serving here. Good luck with everything and I am off to spend this beautiful day inside, in my apartment, as we collapse and discard most of our funiture, as we just got new ones from our Landlord, who is also the branch president. [The leader of the Branch, which is a small congregation of members.]

President Irwin [Joseph's mission president] impresses me as well. He really is a spiritually amazing man and has quite a job to acheive here in the Czech Prague Mission. Many areas of the mission are struggling and there is a significant lack of priesthood leaders in many of the smaller branches. One missionary in Slovakia is the Branch President [of his small congregation] and my companion is the Elders' Quorum President and was in the branch presidency up in Liberec.

President Irwin really has quite a vision for this area and really loves us as missionaries.

Love,
Elder Schindler

ps-I am really imressed with how good this letter is. [We like it also, of course, we like all of Joseph's letters!]

Letter from Joseph's mission president - 9May2011

9 May 2011

Dear Brother and Sister Schindler:

I am pleased to inform you that your son, Elder Joseph William Schindler has been appointed as District Leader over the ceske budejovice district. Elder Schindler is an outstanding missionary and has touched the lives of many here in the Czech Prague Mission.

As a District Leader, he is responsible for helping the ceske budejovice district run smoothly and effectively. He assists all the missionaries in the District in energetically building up the Kingdom of God. They look up to him for inspiration and example. He effectively carries out his duties and is a positive influence to the members of the branch.

These are very important responsibilities for which he has faithfully prepared. I feel it an honor to serve with him. I have watched Elder Schindler carefully and know him to be a very special young man and a dedicated servant of the Lord. Thank you for raising such a fine young man. May the Lord bless you as you continue to support him in his missionary labors.

Sincerely,

David R. Irwin

President, Czech Prague Mission

I hope you are staying dry and safe. Love, Joseph's editor - BWS]
Dear Dad, Mom, Weston, Daniel, Andrew, Christopher and Nicholas,

This past week has flown by. I do not know why for sure, but I have never had weeks melt away like they are doing now. I think part of it is that we have been rather busy this transfer and I have had quite a number of topics on my mind that require time for pondering and study. I feel amazing to be perfectly honest and am so glad that I can be here as a missionary. The Czech language is still an imposing force against us, but we are working and learning and improving.

I have been memorizing scriptures these past weeks and am pleased to report that I have succesfully met my goal and I have memorized one section of verses every day for the past eleven days with about four more to go. Then I can finally earn those tabs for my scriptures at mission conference. Even more so, however, I still know them, as I worked on each for a couple days after it was commited to memory. This has helped keep me busy too.

Elder Hicken and his companion, Elder Shumway, our wonderful Zone Leaders, came down to do an exchange with Elder Darrington and me last Wednesday. I worked with Elder Hicken and was greatly strengthened by his testimony and dedication to missionary work. I remember when I first met him; he was my companion in the MTC, a member of a little more than a year and full of faith and energy. He has astounded me that he has been able to keep up that level of faith and diligence, to a point that I ám tempted to be jealous. However, we are great friends and that exchange encouraged me to serve better and to dedicate myself to the work here.

We really are only working with one investigator at the moment, whose name is Milo. He is an older man who was found right before I came into the area. He has been reading the Book of Mormon and has not missed a day of church since he was found. He is working on following the Word of Wisdom and is a wonderful, quiet and humble man.

We were also glad to see a less active member named Zorro come to church yesterday. He loves church and has wanted to come for a long while, but lives too far away to come as the bus time are rather horrendous. However, we arranged with a member to go pick him up before church. He was so happy and for the next three hours bore his testimony about his love for church. It was wonderful to see such an example of love of church meetings and the Spirit.

I am looking foward to our Specialized Training this Friday and next Tuesday, Elder Pearson of the First Quorum of Seventy will be coming for a Mission Conference, as he is picking up his son at the end of his mission (in our mission here). That will be great, although having this surprise trip to Prague will likely put me more financially behind than I had planned, but it will even out next month.

By the way, I took out some money to buy a pair of slacks, as I only have one at the moment and I think I should have a pair I can wear while the other is being washed.

Love you.

I really have been having a wonderful time down here and love the country and the people.

Love,
Elder Schindler

Letter from Joseph dated 16May2011

[Dear family and friends, this is the letter we received from Joseph this morning. I will be posting the pictures he sent in his blog. Check tomorrow and they should be there! Please continue to send your notes to me -- and I will forward them to Joseph. Thank you for your continuing love and support! Joseph's editor - BWS]

Dear All,

Thank you for the game ideas. They are great. I know that at least a couple of them will be quite successful here. I am looking forward to using them.

Also, I, Elder Schindler, have sent you photos. [Soon to be published on Joseph's blog!] I thus feel no reason that would stop me from demanding (pleading) for photos in return. I love you and want to see a little bit more of you. [We did send a couple of pictures this week!] Please get those pictures coming. Last Monday we went to Hluboká and took the pictures. That is where that castle is.

This week went a little bit slowly, but Saturday more than made up for it. We went to visit a member from Bulgaria named Zorro (sign of the z, Antonio Bandaras, the whole bit. He is a very cool guy). Anyhow, he has a very difficult time coming to church because the bus times are horrendous, and so we went to visit him. He was so welcoming and thankful to see us, telling us that our visit would help get him through the next week. Then he introduced us to a family of seven, who we were able to teach and share the message of the Restoration. It was a wonderful Saturday.

Outside of that, we had a good, normal week. We are meeting with a man named Milo who is preparing for baptsim in just under a month. He is doing well and came to church for the second time yesterday. He enjoyed it.

Well, I have to go, but before I do, I have a couple of things to say.

One, Mom, in the program for Oliver, it says that you live at home with your six sons. I do not live at home. I do not even live in the same country. I think it should have said that you live with five sons, and the oldest is preaching the fulness of the restored gospel in Southern Bohemia. That would be a lot cooler.

Also, family, please send me the lyrics to Sweet Spirt from the movie Sons of Provo. That would be most appreciated.

I love you,

Ëlder Schindler

Joseph's letter dated 9May2011

[Dear friends and family, I hope this letter finds you well, safe and happy. We were able to have a wonderful chat with Joseph yesterday by phone. He sounds GOOD! It was a very short 40 minutes.

Just a few highlights from the call:

-- Weston was only able to join us on the call for about 10 minutes - given that he had to go back to work. Since he will be leaving on his mission in a few months, he and Joseph will not have the chance to see each other for a while. Joseph asked Weston to tell him "everything" about what Weston was doing. Weston said, "Well, we now have Netflix." Joseph responded, "Weston, tell me ANYTHING but that!"

-- Joseph said that the city where he is now serving is the most beautiful city in which he has served.

-- Joseph's companion is from Idaho! (Somewhere near Nampa.)

-- There is a small branch in the city where Joseph is serving. On Sunday, they only had 20 people in attendance. Joseph is looking for ways that he can better serve these people.

-- Joseph promised to send more pictures -- if we would send him more pictures! We assigned this task to Weston -- given that Weston has the best camera.

-- Joseph asked specifically about his missionary friends -- Colten, Craig and Alex.

-- Joseph also asked about his high school teachers and friends -- about how they are doing. He specifically asked about Tom, Forrest and a couple others whom I will remember later!

All in all, it was good to talk to Joseph. He is sounding very grounded and very happy! His sense of humor is . . . intact!

Thank you for all of your notes of support.

Love, Joseph's editor -- BWS]

Dear Family,

Well, since I spoke with you yesterday, I do not have a lot else to add to this week's communication system. I am happy and healthy and ready for a great week out here in good old Bohemia (I say that because I have to run up to Prague tonight and will be there tomorrow).

I love you all and hope that all of you are having a blast back home.

So I have a request. The missionaries here hold an FHE game night on Friday and we need some game ideas since most of ours are already expended. Could you please send me any such game ideas? Maybe ask Sister Jones. I remember that she had many wonderful ideas.

Remember, tell Brad I said congratulations and tell Colten I said hello. [Brad is one of Joseph's friends who recently was married; Colten recently returned from his mission to Italy!]

Got to run,
Love you,
Elder Schindler.
